"Just a spoonful of sugar, makes the medicine go down." Mary Poppins
Mary Poppins is one of the smartest of all time. Sensitive, insightful, intelligent, articulate and wonderful in every way. The classic tale is littered with pearls of wisdom honed over generations and built on good old fashioned values. Stiff upper lip stuff. A quip for every problem that warms the heart and melts the problem away.
"When the world turns upside down, the best thing to do is turn right along with it." says Mary. I love it. Our world has turned and we are trying to turn with it. We will turn. As soon as we can get off our backs. I feel like a turtle right now.
If I read another 'good news story' about hospitality, I'm going to throw up my Cronut. Anyone who thinks that the current situation is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, needs to get the umbrella out of their arse before it opens. Sycophant journos who think they are lightening society's mood are making a joke at our expense. I'm not laughing.
Can we collectively park our largish egos and stop trying to cash in on public relations 'free hits'? Seriously, if one more celebrity chef spruiks a 'success in the face of adversity', 'feel good' story, I'm going to out you. Who cares if you deliver to the Mornington Peninsula, approve your payroll or re-invent the wheel. You are masking a stark reality. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for you supporting staff, soldiering on and adapting your business for now. Just don't get too distracted. The soundtrack in your head is playing for now, I hope there will be a chair at the table to sit on when the music stops.
Mother Mary, we are going to need more than sugar to swallow this bitter pill.
